The discovery of rare stone age rock carving in Usgalimal, Sanguem taluka has bought over on the map of rock cart in India. Rock art came into existence 50,000years ago, but was discovered much later. Most of the rock art areas of southern India are on granite, central India on sandstone and Goa on laterite.
The earliest rock paintings in India date back to period 8,000years before present. The peculiarity of the rock cut carvings at Usgalimal is that, they are all on very hard platform. The site is 6km away from Rivana, here unique image of mother goddess was found by Directorate of archives of Goa in 1988.  The site at usgalimal gets submerged under water for almost 8months during monsoon, every year.  This site is full of carvings depicting symbols of fertility cult, religious cosmology, engraving of aniimals like, Zebu, Deer, Gaur, Scenes of chasing animals, mating animals,Bison, X-Ray type animals etc.
Most probably, the  are carved by specially prepared sharp pointed hard stone tools. There are total hundred symbolic figures. The Usgalimal petroglyphs are those of  Mesolithic  period, 30,000BC.

 Eddicts and Copper plates

The ancient history of Goa can be traced from the Mauryan times before Christian era. The Girnar rock cut edict of the great Mauryan emperor Ashoka refers to the people as Pettinikas, Rasgtrikas  and Bhojas, who already settled down in semi-independent kingdoms comprising the Deccan  and the Konkan. It is also known from 13th rock edict that the Bhojas and Pettinikas were instructions of mortality. We have got 6 copper plate inscriptions of the Bhojas of south-Konkan, extending over the period from 4th to 7th cent.AD. No records of the Bhojas belonging to early Mauryan period are so far discovered.
The earliest known record of the Bhoja ruler of Goa was found at Shiroda, on palaeographical grounds supposed to be belonging to 3rd or 4th cent.AD. It was issued from Chandrapur i.e. modern Chandor on the banks of river Paroda. Thus, king Devraj of Shiroda plate is the first known ruler of the Bhoj dynasty of Chandrapur. We have two grants of Bhoj king Prithvimallavarman, which was found at Bandoda. The other 3 were found at Kumta in north-Canara, Khapoli in Khanapur issued by king Asankitraj, Asankitwarman and king Kapalivarman respectively.
There are many such other sources for the study of history of Goa, but since, not all of them are reliable many are not taken into consideration at all. The major role in studying thr history of Goa and bringing it to light has been done by Directorate of Archies of Goa. This brings us the insight into the ancient history of Goa as well.

  1. Your article is nice, however the information about the Shiroda Copper plate needs to be corrected.
It was found at Borim, in the house of Sawkars. The details can be found in book by Anant Shenvi Dhume titled "The Cultural History Of Goa" available on Amazon
